Goji Berry-Turmeric Tonic
My tweet of making this tonic last Sunday morning had more likes than I had seen in a long time. Clearly, the lack of access to fresh juice bars and overall minimalization of outdoor time have severely impacted folks’ daily regimen. And so I thought I should post the recipe as it’s super easy.
I started making this tonic a few years ago as goji berries are rich in vitamins A and C and contains iron, 18 amino acids, and high levels of beta-carotene. There are claims that it promotes longevity. Turmeric contains curcumin which is said to prevent heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s. It is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
This recipe and can be consumed either cold (my preference) or hot.
INGREDIENTS
- 4 tablespoons of dried goji berries
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder or 1 tablespoon fresh turmeric
- 2-3 tablespoons honey
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne powder
PREPARATION
Add 3 cups of water, goji berries and turmeric in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes.
Off heat, add honey, lemon juice and cayenne pepper. Adjust any of these to taste.
Blend tonic to a smooth consistency.
Reminder that the turmeric will stain certain containers and that whatever container you use should be able to be shaken as the drink will settle.
